The other day I mentioned in this column a freeware program that would list all the devices connected to your wireless network. Which made me wonder whether there was a similar program to scan for all devices, whether wireless or wired. Needless to say, there are many, but I wanted one that was both good and free. And I found it.
The program I prefer is called Advanced IP Scanner. You can get it from http://filehippo.com/download_advanced_ip_scanner and it's a download of around 8.4 MB. When you run the installer, you can choose whether to permanently install it on your computer, or run it straight away in portable mode. Which is nice.
When you run it, the program works out the IP address of your computer and then scans for any other devices within the same range of IP addresses. It will, where possible, show the IP address and other information about what's connected, as well as whether each device is running things such as a web server. So give it a try if you want to know how many computers, phones, tablets etc (including anyone who's hacked your wireless password!) are using your internet connection.
The program is malware-free according to VirusTotal and Web of Trust.
